If I refer, will the patient's family doctor be negated? Lactation medicine is not designated as an area of focused practice. Referral prevents negation with initial consult. For follow-up, we typically use codes that do not incur negation. In the unusual situation where they are not appropriate, We will reach out to the PCP and request they temporarily de-roster the patient. Follow-up of non-birthing parents will incur negation, so please de-roster during the induction of lactation process. Please delay rostering the infant until the dyad is no longer receiving our care, as all infant follow-up codes will incur negation.

• Feeding aversion / refusal

• Blood in stool or significant reflux (infant)

• Tongue-tie assessment / poor oromotor function

• Medical issues in parent / infant affecting infant feeding

How do I refer? Unless it is a prenatal, kindly direct the referral for both the lactating person and baby, as care is provided for both members of the feeding dyad. Complete referral form (below) and fax to 905-529-7465. Please reach out with any questions.
